Come to Glory Young Adult Fellowship this Saturday at 6pm at our place.  It’s a potluck and the bible study and prayer afterwards.  It’ll be a fun time.  We’re going through a new series called ENCOUNTER.  Come take a look at Jesus and Zaccheus with us.  I promise it will be challenging and NOT boring.

Reasons why I like Mark Driscoll (Also probably related to why he’s complementarian):

In Seattle, the young men are, generally, pathetic. They are unlikely to go to church, get married, have children, or do much of anything else that smacks of being responsible. But they are known to be highly skilled at smoking pot, masturbating, playing video games, playing air guitar, free-loading, and having sex with their significant others. However, the emerging-church massage-parlor antics of labyrinth-walking by candlelight will do little more than increase the pool of extras for television’s Will and Grace. If there is any hope for a kingdom culture to be built in Seattle, getting the young men to undergo a complete cranial-rectal extraction is priority number one.

Mark Driscoll, Radical Reformission, p. 184

And:

The problem in the church today is just a bunch of nice, soft, tender, chickafied church boys. 60% of Christians are chicks and the 40% that are dudes are still sort of…chicks. It’s just sad.

We’re looking around going, How come we’re not innovative? Cause all the innovative dudes are home watching football or they’re out making money or climbing a mountain or shooting a gun or working on their truck. They look at the church like that’s a nice thing for women and children. So the question is if you want to be innovative: How do you get young men? All this nonsense on how to grow the church. One issue: young men. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. They’re going to get married, make money, make babies, build companies, buy real estate. They’re going to make the culture of the future. If you get the young men you win the war, you get everything. You get the families, the women, the children, the money, the business, you get everything. If you don’t get the young men you get nothing.

Roles are for practical situations:

Example: a mother gives birth to a baby.  Who necessarily goes out to get the food?  Who necessarily protects the mother and baby?  The father of course.  The mother and baby are both weaker physically.  They both are not as capable of getting food or working in that situation.  Thus, the father is the protector and the provider.

Thus, roles do not apply outside of those practical situations:

Example: When the baby grows up and is perhaps stronger, more capable of working than the father and the father is now old and weak.  The “child” becomes the protector and provider.

I think the same can be said for the office of elder in a church.

Finished reading Shaping of Things to Come .  Its a good book.  Its like a textbook or probably more of a handbook.  Its very complete.

Next up is Erwin McManus’s An Unstoppable Force .  As I think about it, Shaping of Things to Come is very radical.  So radical that I think a lot of the things McManus did and is doing with Mosaic would be “outdated” or “not recommended” by Hirsch and Frost.

I finally started reading The Shaping of Things to Come by Hirsch and Frost.  Its definitely a much better researched and well thought out book than any of the other books I’ve read regarding this issue.  Have any of you read it?  Anybody want to share any thoughts while I read it?  What do you think of the emerging conversation or movement?  I hope they talk about generational issues like children’s ministry.

Do you still have really “close” friends?  I remember in high school and college people had really “close” friends all the time.  Now it seems that those friends have drifted apart and the friends aren’t as close anymore.  Do you still have really close friends?  Friends that you share every secret with?  You can stay up late at night talking about the deepest concerns of your heart?

Or maybe its just that we don’t have secrets anymore.  No more deep concerns?  Or maybe we just got married and we share everything with our spouses?  Maybe its supposed to be that way?

I agree with Nat.  Women need to take more initiative.

Humans make drinks out of the weirdest things:

Bean drink = coffee

Leaf drink = tea

Wheat drink = beer

Dirt drink = mineral water

Air drink = soda

Bad day for green.

BLUE is officially the best color in the world.

When I saw the book  Blue Like Jazz on the table, I knew blue would be tough to beat.

I love spicy food.  I don’t know what it is or why that is.

A burger sounds good.  A burger with jalapenos sounds REALLY good.

Chicken wings sound good, but spicy buffalo wings sound really good.

A sub sandwich sounds good, but a sandwich with pepperoncinis sounds really good.

Prime Rib au jus sounds good. Prime Rib au jus with horseradish sauce sounds really good.

The problem is, I don’t think my stomach can handle spicy food at all anymore.  But I eat it anyway.
